  • Insert fresh carbon rod in carbon evaporator source
  • Attach carbon evaporator source to rod A&C and grounded rod 14cm from grid
  • Move stop over sample to prevent C from coating during off gassing
  • Lower bell jar
  • Close safety latch on bell jar
  • Push "cycle" wait for bell jar to pump down to 10-4
  • Turn dial to #0 (L)
  • Switch LT selector to A (10V)
  • Switch on LT
  • Turn the selector up to # 4 to off gas contamination slowly
  • Move sample stop away from sample
  • Make sure variable control is at 0
  • Add liquid nitrogen to the LN2 trap
  • Allow vacuum to recover to 5x10-6 - may need to be restarted
  • Turn variable switch slowly until a glow is present
  • Hold for 30 seconds to condition carbon tip
  • Turn up variable control slowly to around #6, if sparks are seen back down on the power
  • Coat to desire thickness
  • Turn down variable control
  • Turn selector switch to "0"
  • Press "vent"
