Dear Committee members,
Further to my last message, I am attaching the documents recently sent to our two potential vendors requesting their Best and Final Offers. One document spells out the legal terms for providing their responses and the second document details the particular configuration of microscopes and our requested performance specifications. Responses are due back on April 15 after which time I will distribute some kind of summary of their respective responses to you and call a meeting to discuss our final choice of vendor.
At this meeting I would also like to discuss the prospects of running a city-wide course in Cryoelectron Microscopy at NYSBC - perhaps in the fall. Additionally, we might like to offer NYSBC resources as part of relevant courses taught at your respective institutions. To prepare for this discussion, I would ask you to consider whether relevant courses are in fact taught at your institution and perhaps contact the course director(s) to consider whether they might be interested in bringing a small group to NYSBC for a practical demonstration of cryoEM. Either Jasper or Lisa from NYSBC will be contacting about your availability during the first week in May.
To summarize the microscope configuration requested:
200kV FEG microscope with the following configuration:
Single-tilt cryoholder for high resolution biological imaging
Tietz F224HD slow scan CCD camera
Tietz F114NX near-axis fast scan CCD camera
Tietz software for tomography acquisition
And with the following items quoted separately as an option:
Rotate-tilt cryoholder for tomographic imaging
Additional software for tomography acquisition
300kV FEG, microscope with the following configuration:
rotate-tilt liquid He stageand all accessories necessary to operate the microscope at liq He temperatures
energy filter
Gatan Ultrascan 4kx4k CCD camera
Gatan 676 TV-rate CCD camera with Ultrascan optics (cf. Paul Miller)
And with the following items quoted separately as an option:
Additional software for tomography acquisition
120kV "loaner" microscope with option to purchase and move into phase III.
More later,
David
