Directions: http://www.nysbc.org/AboutUs/directions.html Workshop in Dual-Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy at the New York Structural Biology CenterThis workshop will introduce the new Helios 650 Nanolab microscope at NYSBC and illustrate its capabilities for producing large scale (10um x 10um x 10um) 3D reconstructions through resin-embedded tissue as well as for preparing frozen, whole-mount cells for electron tomography. In the literature, this method is alternately referred to as Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling and Ion Abrasion SEM.

National & International Cryo-EM Meetings, Workshops and Practical CoursesEMBO practical course on cryo-EM and 3D image processingThe EMBO practical course on cryo-EM and 3D image processing will take place this year from 26th August-2nd September at EMBL in Heidelberg. As in the past, the course will provide in depth theoretical and practical training, with the focus on image processing for 3D reconstruction. Registration is now open. We invite for applications to participate in the fourth international workshop on electron crystallography of membrane proteins. This workshop will focus on data processing, with emphasis on 3D reconstructions from images of tilted 2D crystals. The hand-on workshop on the processing of images from cryo-electron microscopy of 2D crystals of membrane proteins (electron crystallography) will provide the theoretical background and practical applications in advanced image processing algorithms. The workshop will use the 2dx software system, which is based on the MRC programs. Theoretical morning lectures will be followed by practical exercises in the afternoon. Although we will provide iMacs for every participant, you are encouraged to bring your own laptop (Linux or OSX), or at least a portable hard-drive (USB2.0), onto which we will install the relevant software systems and test data during the workshop. The spectrum of topics covered suits attendees who are entirely new to the field as well as those who wish to acquire an in-depth understanding of the methodology. Topics range from data collection and three-dimensional reconstruction techniques to the final interpretation of the cryo-EM maps by fitting X-ray structures. The last days of the meeting will be devoted to advanced topics such as dealing with heterogeneous data sets ("4D" cryo electron microscopy) and high-resolution refinements. A special emphasis will be placed this time on the processing of massive data sets collected automatically with the newest generation of microscopes (KRIOS). The attendees are expected to bring along a modern notebook computer onto which all necessary software will be installed. Most processing will take place in the context of the IMAGIC software system but other software packages such as Frealign will be used. Cryo-EM data sets will be distributed for processing during the course. The participants may bring their own data sets for processing and discussion. The meeting will take place in the Grinberg's Village Hotel, which is situated in the scenic countryside of Socorro, about 2 hours drive from Sao Paulo. Essential background theory of CEMOVIS will be given and most of the time will be spent practicing high-pressure freezing, cryo-sectioning, and low-dose TEM imaging. 1 high-pressure freezing machine, 3 state-of-the-art cryo-ultramicrotomes and 1 cryo-electron microscope will be dedicated to the course. The 3-day course is given twice, each time with a maximum of 4 participants so that they can be actively practicing at any time. The course is intended for scientists whose research projects will benefit from the use of CEMOVIS. Experience in either cryo-electron microscopy or ultramicrotomy of resin-embedded specimens is a prerequisite. Electron Tomography of Macromolecular Complexes and Cells with SerialEM (online seminar)Offered in collaboration with the National Center For Macromolecular Imaging. The schedule is designed to give lots of time for people to ask questions. It is set up with somewhat independent segments that have half-hours breaks between them, so you can participate in whichever segments fit your time and interest. A Workshop on Advanced Topics in EM Structure DeterminationThe National Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy Announces A Workshop on Advanced Topics in EM Structure Determination November 11-16, 2012 National Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), La Jolla, California. We invite applications to participate in a Workshop on EM Structure Determination of Challenging Macromolecules. The workshop is aimed at students, postdocs and faculty that already have some experience practicing cryoEM. We can accommodate a total of 100 participants. A major goal of the workshop will be to discuss some of the challenges that we face in using cryoEM to solve the structure of macromolecules. Topics to be discussed will include improvements in specimen preparation, imaging, processing and reconstruction, and methods for validation. The basic format of the course will be theoretical lectures in the mornings followed by practical demonstrations and panel discussions in the afternoon. Evenings will be reserved for poster presentations by participants and research talks by instructors.
