CEM construction contingency plan

General information

CUNY will build a new laboratory building adjacent to the NYSBC. Although the plan was for the construction to start in the summer of 2008, it can tentatively start as early as Spring. It is very likely that vibrations caused by blasting and heavy construction equipment will interfere with the operation of the electron microscopes, and therefore some scheduling changes will need to be made. The CEM staff is committed to working with the affiliates to minimize the inconveniences during construction, and insure the continuity of the research programs. Below is an outline of changes that we plan to make. We are open to suggestions and would like to hear about any concerns.

Laboratory Hours

  • Working, staffed hours will be shifted as follows:
    • 12 - 8pm during light construction
    • 2 - 10pm during heavy construction
Changed:
<
<
  • Since the construction schedule is subject to change, we will post the weekly laboratory hours here on the Wednesday of the previous week.
>
>
  • Since the construction schedule is subject to change, we will post the weekly laboratory hours here on the Wednesday of the previous week. Updates and changes to this schedule will be e-mailed to all affiliates as construction alerts.

  • CEM facility will be open and staffed on Saturdays (or both weekend days if the need arises). Since there will be staff available to work on weekends, affiliates will not be required to have 24 hour access at the weekend.

Microscope allocation

  • There will be no change to microscope allocations
  • The available hours for the microscopes will shift in synchrony with the laboratory hours
  • Use the Request page to be assigned microscope time during the weekend

Transportation and Safety Accommodations

  • NYSBC employees and affiliates will have access to the CUNY shuttle bus http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/current/subway.cfm
  • CUNY security will monitor the exterior of the premises until midnight
  • Parking permits may be available during construction, but these have to be arranged ahead of time
