Standard Operating Procedure

Coating of resin-embedded samples attached to stubs

  1. Turn on machine (switch on back)
  2. Open chamber
  3. Put sample(s) in stage, noting position
  4. close chamber
  5. Press System Start
  6. Press Screens
  7. Press Manual Sputter
  8. Turn pump on by pressing "Mech Pump Off" button
  9. Open pump valve (vertical = OPEN; horizontal = CLOSED)
  10. System should pump to <100 mTorr within 2 minutes
  11. Open Argon tank valve
  12. Open gas valve by pressing "Gas Valve Off"
  13. Vacuum will immediately degrade to ~700 mTorr then recover
  14. Wait for vacuum to get between 50 and 50 mtorr (may need to adjust gas opening valve)
  15. Set current to 25 mA
  16. Turn on rotation
  17. Turn on current. Time with timer for 5 minutes
  18. turn off current
  19. Turn off gas valve
  20. Close Argon gas valve
  21. turn off rotation
  22. Close mechanical pump valve (horizontal position)
