Standard Operating Procedure

Coating of resin-embedded samples attached to stubs

  1. Turn on machine (switch on back)
  2. Open chamber
  3. Put sample(s) in stage, noting position
  4. close chamber
  5. Press System Start
  6. Press Screens
  7. Press Manual Sputter
  8. Turn pump on by pressing "Mech Pump Off" button
  9. Open pump valve (vertical = OPEN; horizontal = CLOSED)
  10. System should pump to <100 mTorr within 2 minutes
  11. Open Argon tank valve
  12. Open gas valve by pressing "Gas Valve Off"
  13. Vacuum will immediately degrade to ~700 mTorr then recover

  1. Wait for vacuum to get between 50 and 50 mtorr (may need to adjust gas opening valve)

  1. Set current to 25 mA
  2. Turn on rotation
  3. Turn on current. Time with timer for 5 minutes
  4. turn off current
  5. Turn off gas valve
  6. Close Argon gas valve
  7. turn off rotation
  8. Close mechanical pump valve (horizontal position)
  9. Open pump ballast valve to equalize pressure. Leave open for ~10s, then close
  10. Turn off mechanical pump
