The letter should clearly define the period of time requested, and certify that the applicant will provide their own round trip travel, personal accommodation in New York, and health and accident insurance. Applicants may wish to identify NYSBC associated faculty with whom they expect to interact.

Sponsors of applicants should provide the above information and their cover letter of sponsorship indicating their degree of willingness to use their Member Institution's resource allocations for the applicant.

Review

Graduate students and undergraduates from abroad (i.e. outside USA) with preexisting research experience may be considered for a summer program .

How to apply

The letter should clearly define the period of time requested, and certify that the applicant will provide their own round trip travel and personal accommodation in New York. Applicants may wish to identify NYSBC associated faculty with whom they expect to interact.

Review

After receipt of reference information, a review/decision will be provided in less than 20 working days. NYSBC expects to be able to issue, usually by cooperation with a Member Insitutions, a DS-2019 letter to appointees for the purpose of their obtaining an exchange student/scholar visa.

  • NYSBC will provide suitable letters of support for the purposes of US visa application, but cannot commit to pay any legal expenses associated with the visa application. Under immigration law, consular oficers are supposed to start out with the assumption that everyone who applies for a visa has an immigrant intent. It is then up to the applicant to overcome that assumption by proving that he/she has "compelling ties to their home country and a permanent residence that they haven't abandoned". Whenever the visa officer can't come up with a better reason for denying the visa, they just simply drag out the "immigrant intent" rationale. Regrettably, little or nothing can be done to change the decision as these visa officers are the ultimate arbiters. Complaints to the Visa Office of the State Dept are unlikely to be fruitful unless the denial is likely to cause the US embarrassment (high profile cases, for example denying Desmond Tutu). It's unfortunate, but that's not going to work for us.
  • Space and other resource issues will limit the number of possible appointees. Applications may be deferred because of existing commitments or availability of funds.

Specifically for students ( can be sent to them )

Visa

You need a student visa (J1). Therefore you need form DS-2019 which is made by a US university. One of the Member Institutions can do this with the exception probably of Wadsworth. NYSBC cannot do this themselves. You should also contact your local US consulate as soon as possible to be sure that you have all the needed forms.

Additional travel/ tourism

Please check yourself, but the current understanding is that a J-1 provides for a 30 day period at the end for travel.

Accommodation

This is difficult and expensive in NY. There will be an attempt to coordinate with one of the Member Institutions
