JEOL 2100 Controls, Comparison with Tecnai

Hardware Controls

JEOL Tecnai
BEAM Gun Valve Open (software switch on Tecnai)
OL No equivalent, pressing this on JEOL means Aperture Control buttons control objective lens
OPEN, 1,2,3,4 Objective lens insertion - hardware control on column
4 arrows : X,Y Objective lens movement/alignment hardware control on column
Shift X, Shift Y knobs Beam shift trackball
Def/Stig X, Def/Stig Y knobs Multifunction X,Y knobs
Brightness knob Intensity knob
Spot size knob Spot size +/- buttons
F1 button Screen up, Screen down buttons
Mag/Cam L knob Magnification knob
Obj Focus Course/fine knobs Objective focus knob
Diff Focus knob equivalent to objective focus knob i in diffraction mode
Std Focus Eucentric Focus
Z up, Z down buttons Z -axis up/down buttons
Exp time knob Changes film exposure time
Trackball Goniometer movement trackball

Following buttons control meaning of DEF/STIG X and Y

PLA button Unless you are adusting something, should be lit. No equivalent button on Tecnai.
Image Shift button Means Def/Stig X and Y control image shift, available only under Tecnai software
Cond Stig button Adjust condensor stigmation
Obj Stig button Adjust objective stigHmation

Coarse/Fine

Note that Brightness, Shift X&Y, Def/Stig X&Y, Diff Focus, and movement trackball all have a CRS control button which toggles between coarse and fine adjustments

Magnification modes

  • JEOL has 5 buttons that control the mode you are in:
  • Mag 1, Mag 2: Range from 1500X to 1,000,000X
  • Low Mag: Ranges from 50X to 6000X
  • Can immediately jump betwen different magnifications using these buttons
  • SA DIFF : Press to go to diffraction mode (20 cm to 250 cm)

Menu SubMenu Purpose
Dialogue High Voltage Control HT status, Emission status, dark current, emission current, Beam valve open/close
  Specimen Position Map of specimen position, memory of saved positions
  Photo Set Film camera properties
Monitor Status status of system -- everything should be blue and Running
  Vacuum Microscope vacuum diagram and values
Property Stage Holder type, holder exchange control
Option MDS Low dose system controls
  Free Lens Free lens control, important for low-dose (MDS) mode
  Lens/Def Memory Needed to set up MDS mode, should be closed when USING MDS
Maintenance ACD/Bake Turn on ACD heat at end of session
Display   A list of windows you have open, lets you bring selected window to top
JEOLS Hex Display Hex values of microscope registers, good to monitor when using microscope
