Booting into Linux using Knoppix Live CD

  • Download the above file and burn it as a CD image. Reboot your computer, choosing this CD as the boot device. This will bring you into KNOPPIX, a "live" linux environment.
  • The CD should work on just about any Windows PC, notebooks included. It will not work on a PowerPC Mac. Works on an Intel Mac using Parallels.
  • To open a shell, click on the"Konsole" icon at the bottom of the screen (to the right of the little house)
  • This CD contains EMAN 1.7 (EMAN, Copyright 1997-2005, Baylor College of Medicine) , Spider 14 (Copyright 1981-2005, Health Research Incorporated (HRI)), and EM2EM (copyright Image Science Software GmbH) . Please do not redistribute this CD
  • When booting from this CD, the hard drive on your computer is not used. To save files permanently, attach a USB drive and save there. The system should automatically recognize any drive you plug in.
    • N.B. there are (bad) issues with Linux writing to NTFS disks - don't try it
    • FAT32 disks are ok
    • if in doubt, don't try to write to your hard drive using this Knoppix CD - stick with the USB drive
  • When done, choose to reboot or turn off the system, remove the CD and the computer will start as normal.
