Commercial test sites -- These will confirm whether your local system is in good connection

Possible test sites

Broadband.gov

http://www.broadband.gov/ - needs java, and may need to set some permissions

SPEAKEASY (the current NYSBC supplier)

Speakeasy Speed Test Note that this may not work at all with Firefox. If so, try MS internet explorer.
  • Connect to the New York City site and see what your download speed is.
    If it's less than 1000 kb/s, please contact your LOCAL INSTITUTIONAL net manager. The problem is most likely local to your institutional net, and NYSBC regrettably cannot help you.

Instantaneous You may have a cached copy, try using the shift reload on your browser and retime it
Under 16 sec Well within expectation for this 1.9 Mb file
16-32 sec Slowish, but possibly due to multiple users or your local net
Over 32 seconds 1. Repeat test using right click save link as option
2. If still slow, report to mailto:infotech@nysbc.org
Over 60 seconds Go for coffee ...
