NYSBC INFOTECH – WIFI AVAILABILITY

  • To control possible misuse from logins outside the NYSBC building, a password requirement is being installed. Anyone who has comments should send them to infotech@nysbc.org. The password will be posted in A-11, available from the guard, and from infotech at x 420, by internal call.

  1. Restricted WiFi service to WWW. NYSBC has a 802.11b/g public network in place, operating on several channels. You require a standard 802.11b/g receiver/transmitter and the software to select the channel 'Public'. 802.11b may be available but is not supported long term. WiFi is provided as a convenience to users bringing their own laptops to NYSBC. The service is not guaranteed and may be discontinued or modified at any time. This service does not provide access to NYSBC’s internal network, but you can access the web server in the same way as you do outside. Your uses should be under the general regulation of conduct of NYSBC and of your home institution.

  1. Password - Usually posted outside A-11, available from the Security Guard, available from Infotech at x 420.
  2. Access to NYSBC local LAN via WiFi. For security reasons, this is not generally available.
  3. WARNING: This is a completely public net. There are no specific security arrangements. You should make sure that your computer cannot be accessed by others before you attach to this network. NYSBC provides NO assurance of your system's security.
  4. There is NO general provision of wired internet access to guest computers at NYSBC.
  5. You are not likely to exceed the network download speeds of about 300 KB/s . If in doubt see Speed Test
  6. You may only use this WiFi if your system is setup for automatic acceptance of a new IP address. Systems requesting fixed IP addresses may be blocked. Some older Apple OS's have this problem.
  7. For public meetings, software demonstrations, and on line tutorials, there may be many others looking to download materials during sessions. Don't rely on being able to use WiFi at such times, and download in advance.

No non-infotech sites permitted.

The importance of wireless connectivity at NYSBC has increased dramatically in recent years. Security of wireless connectivity is therefore an ongoing concern. Due to security concerns, we do not allow independent wireless units at NYSBC , including Apple's new wireless backup system, Time Capsule, which contains an independent wireless access point.
