Start up

Preparation

  • Lower pressure on standard 22PSI liquid nitrogen tank down to ~10 PSI by attaching pressure lowering device to vent outlet on tank
  • Attach carefully to WW, being particularly careful about connector on WW

  • Open Zero Grade nitrogen gas valve. Pressure should be about 400 PSI (see photo)

  • Open nitrogen gas valve. Pressure should be about 400 PSI (see photo)

    • Zero grade not necessary. Use black tank.
 
  • Open side panel of machine and note current shot number

System Start

  • Turn machine on using large red switch on side
  • Press yellow "System Dry Up" button. Run gas through for 30 minutes.
  • Turn off "System Dry Up."
  • Press green "On/Off" button
  • Press green "Nitrogen" button
  • Open liquid nitrogen tank
  • Wait until red "Nitrogen Level" light goes out
  • Press yellow "Drive in" button.
    • Yellow light will start flashing
    • "Piston Down" red lamp will go on

    • Oil pressure will increase to 100 bar
 
    • "Drive In" light will go out
  • Press green "Auto" button.
Added:

    • Oil pressure will increase to >100 bar
    • System usable when pressure >200 bar
 

Use

  • Insert holder and safety pin
  • Green "Jet Ready" lamp should light
  • Press yellow "Jet Auto" button
  • Wait for yellow "Jet Over" lamp
  • Pull pin and remove sample

Shut down

  • Close liquid nitrogen tank
  • Press green "On/Off" Button
  • Press yellow "System Dry Up" button * Light will blink for 10 hours while system drys
  • Record shots taken in log
  • Once lamp stops flashing close nitrogen gas valve
 

Measuring temperature and pressure (traces to check performance)

Equipment needed

  • EasyScope USB Oscilloscope box and software
  • BNC to BNC cable
  • positive and negative cables plugged in to BNC converter
  • recording holder (for recording temperature)

Set up

Temperature

  • Plug green cable from grey box on top of WW into recording holder
  • Plug one end of black BNC cable into grep box, and other end into left position on EasyScope USB box
  • Remember to connect grey box to power outlet
  • Note: Green cable connector has a fine pin. Be careful to insert correctly and not to break the pin!

Pressure

  • Plug black and red cables into pressure ports on WW, and plug combined BNC output into middle position on EasyScope box

Computer

  • Plug EasyScope box into USB port of "old" lab laptop
  • Start EasyLogger software
  • Set up channel A and B as shown in screencaps below

Recording

  • Set Channel B for trigger
  • Set trigger level as shown in screencap below
  • Put measuring holder (if recording temp) or actual holder (pressure only) in machine
  • After firing shot, should get results close to those shown below
  • May need to scroll screen sideways t be looking at appropriate time region
