Normally a server attempts delivery of an e-mail for 72 hours, after which it is bounced back to the sender. Since the equipment will be powered off for more than 72 hours, to prevent messages sent to nysbc from being returned to the sender, Infotech will arrange for a mail backup service, where all mail addressed to nysbc will be held until the equipment is powered up. Once power has been restored, all messages will be forwarded to our mail server. DC suggestion. Best to advise if mail is not delivered. Expected outage is Fri 5 pm through Mon noon, close to 72 h. Suggest email restoration is top restart item Monday and that backup not be used.

I would like to recommend that all outgoing messages contain a disclaimer stating the times that mailserver will be down and that messages will not be responded to for the time that the server is down.

The mailbackup service will not deliver messages to other accounts, so all the forwarders set up on the mail server will not work.

Infotech

To prepare for the electrical shutdown, Infotech plans to take the following steps to ensure a smooth transition. Please feel free to add any comments.

  • On Thursday, Sept 15, start a full backup of the servers and office pcs to tape. The tapes will be taken offsite.
  • On Friday, Sept 16, initiate a shutdown of all the servers and network equipment. Call the T1 line provider to inform them of the situation.
  • All users will need to power off their PCs, a walkthrough will be required to ensure that all equipment is shut down and unplugged from outlets to prevent damage from power spikes.
  • The following items will be taken offsite -
    • Backup Tapes - including catalog.
    • Operating system drive from the Data Server
  • When power has been restored, we need to start a specific sequence of powering up the equipment.

Equipment Start Order

Computer services will be restored in the following order -
  1. Network
  2. E-mail server
  3. Data Server
  4. SFTP Server
  5. DL380
  6. Accounting - Josh's PC starts first because of drive mappings.
  7. Administration & Office area
  8. Labs
  9. NYSBC Wireless
  10. Public Wireless

GG original Normally a server attempts delivery of an e-mail for 72 hours, after which it is bounced back to the sender.

1. On Thursday, Sept 15, start a full backup of the servers and office pcs to tape. The tapes will be taken offsite.

2. On Friday, Sept 16, initiate a shutdown of all the servers and network equipment. Call the T1 line provider to inform them of the situation.

Added:

3. All users will need to power off their PCs, a walkthrough will be required to ensure that all equipment is shut down and unplugged from outlets to prevent damage from power spikes.

4. The following items will be taken offsite - i. Backup Tapes - including catalog. ii. Operating system drive from the Data Server

5. When power has been restored, we need to start a specific sequence of powering up the equipment.

I would like to recommend that all outgoing messages contain a disclaimer stating the times that mailserver will be down and that messages will not be responded to for the time that the server is down.

The mailbackup service will not deliver messages to other accounts, so all the forwarders set up on the mail server will not work.

Regards,

Dhiresh.
